Lacrosse might not be as punishing as professional wrestling, but don't call it a gentle sport. That's the perspective of Park Vista girls lacrosse coach Larry Brannon, who knows a thing or two about physicality. For 12 years, Brannon was a star in the World Wrestling Federation, performing under the villainous stage name "Vito DeNucci." Now, he's channeling that experience into his eighth season guiding the Cobras.

His background is paying off. Park Vista finished the regular season 9-3, earning the No. 1 seed in the District 15 2A tournament. The team, led by top scorer Brooke Ybarra (a Florida Southern commit) and elite goalie Dayana Perez, has secured a first-round bye and begins its playoff run on Monday, April 13.

Brannon brings a unique brand of mental toughness to the field. While girls' lacrosse rules differ from the boys' game, he dismisses any notion that it's a no-contact sport. "There’s a ton of contact," Brannon states. "They knock the crap out of each other on a regular basis. It’s fast-paced and you’re shooting a hard rubber ball that hurts like hell when you get hit with it."

Every player on the roster is aware of their coach's past life in the ring, where he traveled the globe performing for packed arenas. Now 55 and a history teacher at Park Vista, Brannon carries the physical reminders of that career. "I’ve lost two inches of height because I lost some disks," he says, referencing the toll of being the "heel" who took hits to make the heroes look strong.

That resilience is the lesson he imparts to his team. He talks about wrestling moves like the "Veg-O-Matic" and the "Missile Drop Kick" not just as memories, but as examples of the grit required in competition. By translating the toughness of the squared circle to the lacrosse field, Brannon is building a Cobras squad ready for any challenge the playoffs throw their way.
