Ash Barty just turned 30, and the tennis world can't help but wonder: could the former WTA World No. 1 ever make a comeback? The beloved Australian star, who walked away from the sport at the absolute peak of her powers in 2022, recently gave a characteristically blunt answer: "No chance."
It's hard to believe it's been nearly four years since Barty, then just 25, captured her home Grand Slam at the Australian Open and announced her retirement just weeks later. Since that fairy-tale farewell, life has taken a different, but equally rewarding, path. She and husband Garry Kissick are now busy parents to son Hayden, 2, and daughter Jordan, 11 months.
The question came up while Barty was attending the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro, a World Surfing Championships event in Queensland. Given her history—she famously took a break from tennis in 2015 to play professional cricket before returning in 2016—it's natural for fans to wonder if she might do it again. But this time, the circumstances are completely different.
During her second tennis era from 2016 to 2022, Barty accomplished everything she set out to do. Her resume is nothing short of legendary: three Grand Slam singles titles (2019 French Open, 2021 Wimbledon, 2022 Australian Open), the 2018 US Open doubles crown with CoCo Vandeweghe, the 2019 WTA Finals championship, and an Olympic bronze medal in mixed doubles at the Tokyo 2020 Games with John Peers.
Perhaps the most poignant moment of her career came at the 2022 Australian Open, when her idol, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, surprised her by presenting the trophy—exactly 50 years after Goolagong Cawley herself won the title. It was the perfect capstone for an extraordinary journey.
Barty has nothing left to prove. She's an Aussie icon, a champion on and off the court, and clearly happy in her new role as a busy mom. For now, the tennis rackets can stay in the closet—and that's just fine with her.
