Five years ago, the Minnesota Vikings had a promising young tight end on their roster named Shane Zylstra. After a brief stint, he moved on to the Detroit Lions, where he spent five seasons carving out a role as a reliable depth piece. Now, Zylstra is packing his bags for Buffalo, signing a one-year deal with the Bills.
The Bills added some tight end depth this week, and Zylstra's arrival comes as the team looks to bolster its roster after the NFL draft. Buffalo Rumblings' Chris Trapasso broke the news: "The Buffalo Bills have made another post-draft signing, this time on offense — former Lions tight end Shane Zylstra has been added on a one-year contract."
Zylstra's journey has been one of persistence. He started his career with the Vikings but was cut at the end of training camp, only to be picked up by Detroit. From 2021 to 2025, he served as a dependable third-string option for the Lions, with all four of his career touchdowns coming in a breakout 2022 season. While he's never been a volume pass-catcher, his value lies in his versatility and willingness to do the dirty work.
Think of Zylstra as the quintessential TE3 — the guy you turn to when your top two tight ends need a breather or are sidelined. Over five seasons, his stats reflect that role: a player who makes the most of limited opportunities, whether it's a key block or a timely reception.
Pride of Detroit's Brandon Knapp offered a closer look at Zylstra's 2025 campaign: "As the third-string option, the expectations weren't very high for Zylstra. The year before, he played in 12 games and caught just one pass for a yard. He wasn't used often on offense and only saw his role increase if LaPorta or Wright were out with an injury. He's more of a receiver-styled tight end who doesn't particularly block well. With the team loving tight ends that can do both, he was limited in what they saw in him."
Injuries also hampered Zylstra's 2025 season. After suffering an ankle injury against the Chicago Bears in Week 2, he landed on injured reserve and didn't return until Week 15. He recorded all his receiving stats for the year in a Week 16 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While he saw more offensive snaps than special teams duties before the injury, his role remained clear: a reliable backup ready to step up when called upon.
For Bills fans, Zylstra brings experience and a team-first mentality — exactly the kind of grit that fits Buffalo's culture. Whether he's blocking in the run game or making a clutch catch on third down, he's a solid addition to a tight end room that values depth and versatility.
