The college basketball transfer portal is in full swing, and a key piece from last year's North Carolina backcourt is on the move. Former Tar Heels point guard Derek Dixon has found his new home, committing to play for Tommy Lloyd and the Arizona Wildcats.
Dixon entered the portal last week following the coaching change at UNC and quickly scheduled a visit to Tucson. The Wildcats, perennial contenders under Lloyd, moved fast to secure their new floor general, sealing the deal shortly after his visit.
In his lone season in Chapel Hill, Dixon averaged 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. He began the year as the backup but took over the starting role, finishing the season with 16 starts. His departure marks a significant shift in the Tar Heels' backcourt planning for the 2026-27 season.
For Arizona, this is a major acquisition. Dixon joins a backcourt featuring JJ Mandaquit and Caleb Holt, solidifying the Wildcats' guard rotation as they aim to build on their recent success and make another deep run in the NCAA tournament. This move underscores the high-stakes, fast-paced nature of modern college basketball roster construction.
