Former Premier League winger Ian Poveda has been handed a six-month driving ban after being caught speeding at 100mph. The 26-year-old, who was playing for Sunderland at the time, was stopped by police on the A184 in South Tyneside in February 2023 while driving his black Range Rover.
Poveda, who recently transferred to Colombian side Inter Bogotá, did not attend the hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court. The court was told that a police officer witnessed the vehicle accelerate to well over the 70mph limit on the dual carriageway.
This latest incident proved costly for the footballer, both on and off the pitch. With six pre-existing points on his licence from three prior speeding offences, the new violation triggered a mandatory ban. He was given an additional six penalty points, an £800 fine, and ordered to pay £920 in surcharges and costs.
His defense argued the high speed was maintained for "a very short period of time." Poveda, known for his pace on the wing during spells with Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, and Blackpool, will now have to find alternative transport as he serves his ban.
