Former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Stephen Garcia shared a difficult health update on Wednesday, revealing that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer. In a social media post, Garcia urged everyone to listen to their bodies and seek medical attention if something feels off, emphasizing the importance of early detection.
Garcia's wife, Maria, has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses, and the community has already rallied together, raising over $14,000 toward a $35,000 goal. "Wasn't overly excited to share this news but it is what it is," Garcia wrote. "We have a great team of doctors and staff that's confident we can beat this! It's the only option." He added a heartfelt reminder: "If there's one lesson to be learned, get checked and don't be afraid to visit the doctors office when you don't feel 100%. The stuff we consume has been altered significantly over the years and we've been hearing more and more people in this age range are getting diagnosed with these things."
Garcia, who played for the Gamecocks under legendary coach Steve Spurrier from 2008 to 2011, carved out one of the most prolific passing careers in school history. He ranks third all-time at South Carolina with 7,597 passing yards, fifth with 47 touchdowns, and also added 777 rushing yards and 15 scores on the ground. His most memorable moment came in 2010 when he threw for 210 yards in a stunning upset of then-No. 1 Alabama, leading the Gamecocks to a 9-3 season and their first and only SEC Championship Game appearance.
After his college career, Garcia faced some off-field challenges, including a failed drug test that led to his dismissal during his senior season. He went on to have brief stints in the CFL and AFL before transitioning to a role as a personal quarterback coach in the Tampa area. Now, as he faces this new battle, the sports community is rallying behind him with messages of support and encouragement.
