Former Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has never been one to mince words, and his latest target is Manchester United's Scott McTominay. In a fiery interview with Sky Calcio Unplugged, the Belgian didn't hold back, calling the Scottish international "average" despite his knack for finding the back of the net.
"I don't like him," Nainggolan said bluntly. "He scores a lot of goals—12, 13, 14 a season—but in general play, he lacks the technique to build from between the lines. He's an average player."
Nainggolan's critique comes as McTominay continues to make waves in Serie A with Napoli, where he's added a goal-scoring punch from midfield. But for the outspoken Belgian, that's not enough to earn top-tier respect. He didn't stop there, offering a candid self-assessment against some of football's elite.
"At my peak, I was better than him and Hakan Çalhanoğlu," Nainggolan declared. "But I put Nicolò Barella above myself. He doesn't always score many goals, but when he does, they're crucial—and you always feel his presence on the pitch." He also tipped his hat to Kevin De Bruyne and Luka Modrić, calling them "world-class" talents who see the game differently.
Shifting to Serie A, Nainggolan doubled down on his prediction for Inter's title win, calling it inevitable from the start. "Inter have the strongest squad and play the best football. Napoli and Milan got close, but they lack consistency." As for his former club Roma, he was less forgiving: "They're too inconsistent. With a player like Dybala, you expect more. Roma should never be outside the top four."
Whether you agree with his hot takes or not, Nainggolan's unfiltered opinions remind us why football debates never get old—and why every player's style, from McTominay's goals to Modrić's artistry, adds to the beautiful game's rich tapestry.
