Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Erik Gustafsson could have easily sulked when he was placed on NHL waivers and assigned to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. Instead, the 10-year NHL veteran chose a different path—one defined by leadership, professionalism, and a commitment to helping the next generation of players chase their dreams.

"Obviously, when I first got down, it took a little time to adjust to being a leader, but it's fun," Gustafsson said. "So many skilled guys in here. Great group of guys."

With 517 NHL games under his belt, Gustafsson brings a wealth of experience to a Griffins roster filled with players still dreaming of making the show. Rather than playing out the string and waiting for his contract to expire, he's fully embraced his role as a mentor and leader in Grand Rapids' pursuit of the Calder Cup.

Griffins head coach Dan Watson has seen the impact firsthand. "Just his professionalism, the way he goes about his day-to-day habits, the way he prepares for practices, games, his mentality of it all," Watson said. "I do believe that guys look up to Gus as that's what it takes to get to the NHL, and stay in the NHL for a long time."

On the ice, Gustafsson is producing at an impressive clip—37 points in 39 games while anchoring the top defensive pairing alongside Antti Tuomisto. But it's the intangibles that truly set him apart. Whether it's his calm presence during high-pressure moments or his willingness to share hard-earned wisdom, Gustafsson is proving that true professionals never stop leading, no matter where they play.
