What's new with Devers?

When the Boston Red Sox decided to part ways with Rafael Devers, many fans scratched their heads. It was one of those moves that felt puzzling from the start, especially given the slugger's track record. The situation was further complicated by the Alex Bregman saga—a short-term issue that ultimately became moot when the Red Sox let Bregman walk in free agency anyway. In hindsight, having both Devers and Bregman on the roster should have been a no-brainer for a team looking to compete.

But that's not how it played out. Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants, and the transition hasn't been seamless. The left-handed hitter struggled last season, batting just .236 with 116 strikeouts in San Francisco, and this year hasn't been much kinder—he's hitting .240 with 49 strikeouts already. With numbers like that, trade rumors were bound to surface.

However, a surprising update from FanSided's Robert Murray suggests the Giants are committed to making it work—at least for now. "At this point, I consider it likely that Ray is traded. But the Giants do not want to move Ray or any other player at this point; they want to fight to get back into the postseason conversation, and that means holding onto Ray, Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames. Trading any of those players is off limits at the moment," Murray reported.

While that's a vote of confidence, it's not set in stone. The Giants have stumbled out of the gate this season, ranking among the worst teams in baseball. If they continue to slide, the trade deadline could change everything. For now, Devers remains a Giant—but in the ever-shifting landscape of MLB, that could change in a heartbeat.
