After nine seasons in Cleveland, former Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku is packing his bags for the West Coast. The veteran, affectionately known as "Chief," has agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers worth up to $8 million, according to NFL Network. The move signals a fresh start for the 30-year-old, who will now face his former AFC North rivals twice a year—and will see plenty of the Kansas City Chiefs, too.

Njoku arrives in Los Angeles to join a tight end room that's suddenly full of options. The Chargers have been busy investing at the position, adding young playmaker Oronde Gadsen II—who caught 49 passes as a rookie in 2025—along with veteran blocker Charlie Kolar, who inked a three-year, $24.3 million deal back in March. While three tight ends might seem like a crowd, the NFL's growing trend of using multiple tight end sets means Njoku's versatility could be a major weapon for the Chargers' offense.

A first-round pick by the Browns in 2017, Njoku's best season came in 2023 when he hauled in 81 catches for 882 yards and six touchdowns—all career highs—earning his only Pro Bowl selection. Over his nine-year career, he's posted 384 receptions, 4,062 yards, and 34 touchdowns. But his numbers have fluctuated year to year, largely due to Cleveland's revolving door at quarterback and ever-changing offensive schemes. With a more stable situation in Los Angeles, Njoku has a chance to remind everyone why he was once considered one of the league's most promising young tight ends.

For Chargers fans, this signing adds depth, experience, and a proven red-zone threat to an offense that's already loaded with talent. And for Njoku, it's a chance to prove he's still got plenty left in the tank.
