Former Premier League star David Bentley has sparked fresh debate around Liverpool after claiming the club's fans have "disconnected" from manager Arne Slot. Speaking on Sky Sports News, the ex-winger didn't hold back in his assessment of the growing tension at Anfield.
"I think with Liverpool fans they're unique, very similar to the way Celtic are as well, and they seem to have lost that sort of relationship," Bentley said. "That's really hard to get back."
The comments come after Liverpool's frustrating 1-1 draw against Chelsea, a result that has only intensified scrutiny on Slot's tenure. What was once a fortress of patience and loyalty now feels like a pressure cooker, with the Anfield crowd showing visible signs of unease.
Bentley pointed to a defining moment during the Chelsea match—the substitution of young Rio Ngumoha. The teenager had shown flashes of promise before being withdrawn, prompting audible groans from the stands. "When he took him off the other day, they weren't happy with the decisions he's making," Bentley noted. "You look at times throughout the season, he's made similar decisions. I think the fans have just disconnected from the manager, and that's so hard specifically at Liverpool."
Slot later explained that Ngumoha was struggling physically, but by then the damage was done. The reaction wasn't just about one substitution—it was a symptom of deeper frustrations. Liverpool supporters have always been willing to endure tough periods when they feel connected to a clear vision on the pitch. What's unsettling this season is the perceived lack of identity and emotional intensity that has long been the club's trademark.
The issue now transcends tactical debates or dropped points. It's becoming emotional, and at a club like Liverpool, that matters more than almost anywhere else. For Slot, rebuilding that connection may be the biggest challenge yet.
