Former Patriots Star Stefon Diggs Receives Verdict On Assult, Strangulation Charges

The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs this offseason, and the former All-Pro wide receiver just received a verdict on strangulation and assault and battery charges against him.

In a legal victory that could reshape his NFL future, former New England Patriots star wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been acquitted of all charges related to an alleged domestic incident. The All-Pro pass-catcher was found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery following a two-day trial in Massachusetts.

The charges stemmed from an altercation with Jamila Adams, Diggs' former live-in personal chef. Throughout the proceedings, Diggs maintained his innocence, with his legal team aggressively challenging the credibility of the accusations. "Defense attorney Andrew Kettlewell told jurors during closing arguments that prosecutors had not presented 'a single shred of credible evidence' that an assault occurred," the Associated Press reported. The defense highlighted inconsistencies in Adams' testimony and pointed to financial disputes and personal tensions as potential motives behind the allegations.

This off-field development comes on the heels of a significant roster move by the Patriots. New England released Diggs earlier this offseason, a decision team insiders insist was unrelated to the pending legal case. Instead, the move appears to be financially motivated. Despite posting a productive 1,000-yard receiving season, Diggs' contract structure reportedly didn't align with the Patriots' salary cap plans. The veteran receiver, known for his leadership in the locker room, likely balked at restructuring a deal he felt he had earned.

The Patriots have already pivoted at the position, signing Romeo Doubs and positioning themselves to acquire star wideout A.J. Brown after June 1. While Diggs' time in New England appears to be over, his acquittal removes a major obstacle to his market value. With a clean legal slate and proven production, expect several receiver-needy teams to come calling for the former All-Pro.
