In a heartfelt Instagram post on May 15, former New England Patriots defensive back Joejuan Williams announced his immediate retirement from the NFL at the age of 28, closing the book on a journey that began when he was just a five-year-old with a dream.
Williams, who played 42 games over four NFL seasons, suited up for the Patriots from 2019 to 2021 before brief stints with the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings in 2023. His last opportunity to return to the field came in August 2024 with the New Orleans Saints, but he was released after just one week without playing a regular-season game.
Selected by the Patriots as the 45th overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Vanderbilt, Williams started one game and appeared in 36 contests over his first three seasons. He also saw postseason action in two playoff games for New England: a 20-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans in January 2020 and a 47-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in January 2022, recording six total tackles combined.
In his retirement announcement, Williams reflected on his journey with gratitude and purpose. "At 5 years old I said I'll be in the NFL," he wrote. "You accomplished your dream J. Now it's time to help others accomplish theirs." He thanked God for the ability to play, football for changing his life, and every coach, teammate, and fan who supported him along the way. Williams' football story is one of resilience from the start. A native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, he was a four-star recruit in high school but faced an early obstacle when the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association ruled him ineligible to play his senior year after transferring from Father Ryan High School in Nashville to Hendersonville High School. Despite that setback, he went on to become a second-team All-SEC selection with the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2018, showcasing the talent that made him a coveted NFL prospect.
