In a whirlwind turn of events that perfectly captures the unpredictable nature of professional basketball, former Oregon guard Holly Winterburn has found a new home with the Portland Fire. The team announced Wednesday that they have signed the British sharpshooter to a developmental contract, giving her a fresh start after a dramatic departure from the Atlanta Dream.

Winterburn's journey to the WNBA has been anything but conventional. The Northampton, England native spent the 2019-2020 season with the Ducks before returning to Europe to continue her career. Despite going undrafted in 2025, she earned a free agent contract with the Atlanta Dream—a testament to her grit and determination.

Her rookie season was sidelined by injury, but Atlanta kept her on the roster for the 2026 preseason. Then came the gut-wrenching moment she shared with fans on May 9. In an emotional Instagram story, Winterburn revealed she was waived just as she was about to board the team bus for the season opener—against none other than the Portland Fire.

"I thought my welcome to the W moment would happen on the court, not as I'm getting on the bus for my first ever game," Winterburn wrote. "But that's the reality of this business & I will always be grateful for the opportunity Atlanta gave me. I'm built for this."

The 25-year-old guard showed flashes of her potential in her lone preseason appearance, posting 12 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Now she joins a Fire squad riding high after securing their first win of the season against the New York Liberty.

For Winterburn, this is more than just a second chance—it's a reminder that in sports, the next opportunity is always just around the corner. And for Portland fans, they're getting a player who's ready to prove she belongs.
