While the Oregon Ducks' defensive line remains stacked with a star quartet of returning starters and fresh portal additions, one former reserve is poised to make a major impact elsewhere this fall. Tionne Gray, a 6-foot-6, 336-pound defensive lineman who transferred to Notre Dame, is already generating buzz as a future standout for the Fighting Irish.
Gray was one of eight Oregon defensive line reserves to enter the transfer portal in January—a loss that, while manageable for the Ducks' deep rotation, still stung for head coach Dan Lanning and defensive coordinator Chris Hampton. But for Gray, the move could be a career-defining leap.
The Athletic's Sam Khan Jr. recently ranked Gray as the 14th-best transfer portal defensive lineman, placing him behind only elite talents like Miami's Damon Wilson II and LSU's Princewill Umanmielen. "Gray played in a rotational role last season (275 snaps), but he showed a lot of promise, given his massive size and strength," Khan wrote. "He has no problem occupying multiple offensive linemen and holding the point of attack in the interior defensive line. Gray and fellow transfer Brewu will give Notre Dame an impressive defensive tackle duo going into 2026."
As a redshirt freshman in 2025, Gray recorded 18 total tackles while learning behind standout starters Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington. His imposing frame allows him to command double teams, creating opportunities for teammates to flow to the ball. At Oregon, he would have seen an increased role in 2026—but at Notre Dame, he's expected to step directly into a starting gig at defensive tackle.
Gray's situation is a testament to the sheer talent depth on Oregon's roster. The Ducks simply don't have enough snaps to keep everyone happy, and while losing a player like Gray stings in the short term, it's also a powerful recruiting calling card. When a rotational piece like Gray can transfer to a premier program like Notre Dame and immediately start, it speaks volumes about the caliber of athletes Lanning and Hampton are bringing to Eugene.
