The International Volleyball Hall of Fame has announced that former Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook has won the Mayoral Award of Excellence.

Legendary Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook is adding another prestigious honor to his storied career. The International Volleyball Hall of Fame has named Cook the recipient of its 2026 Mayoral Award of Excellence, recognizing his profound impact on the sport and its community.

Cook's legacy is built on an incredible 32-year head coaching career, highlighted by 24 seasons at the helm of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. During his tenure in Lincoln, he transformed the program into a national powerhouse, securing four national championships, nine Big 12 titles, and six Big Ten championships, amassing a phenomenal career record of 883-176.

The award specifically honors individuals whose leadership has used volleyball to foster civic pride, cultural connection, and economic growth—a perfect description of Cook's influence in Nebraska. "Nebraska has always been a special place for volleyball," Cook said, reflecting on the honor. "What’s meant the most to me is seeing how deeply this sport has connected with people... and united communities across the state."

Though he retired from collegiate coaching after the 2024 season, Cook remains a driving force in the sport's growth. He is now the General Manager and Co-Owner of the Omaha Supernovas in Major League Volleyball, helping to lead the professional game's exciting new chapter.

Cook will be formally presented with the award on April 10, 2026, at the CHI Health Center in Omaha during a Supernovas match. He will also be celebrated later that year at the International Volleyball Hall of Fame’s Induction Celebration in Holyoke, Massachusetts, cementing his status as a true architect of the modern volleyball landscape.
