In a move that shakes up the NFC, former Detroit Lions nose tackle DJ Reader is taking his talents to the Big Apple. The 31-year-old defensive lineman has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the New York Giants, marking the latest departure from a Lions roster that's seeing significant turnover this offseason.

Reader's tenure in Detroit was brief but impactful. After signing a two-year, $22 million contract in 2024, the veteran anchor suited up for 32 of a possible 34 games, racking up 51 tackles, 3.0 sacks, and 12 quarterback hits. While he was a cornerstone of the Lions' run defense in 2024, the unit struggled to maintain that momentum last season, making this loss particularly tough for Detroit's front office.

The Lions are feeling the pinch along the defensive line, having already lost reserve tackle Roy Lopez to the Buccaneers on a two-year, $10.5 million deal. So far, Detroit's response has been measured: they signed veteran Jay Tufele last week and brought in undrafted rookie Aidan Keanaaina. But with two key pieces walking out the door, the pressure is on to fill those gaps.

Fortunately, the Lions have options brewing in-house. Alim McNeill, now nearly two years removed from a torn ACL, is expected to be fully healthy after missing seven games last season. First-round pick Tyleik Williams, who saw just 40.4% of snaps as a rookie, is primed for a bigger role. Other potential contributors include Levi Onwuzurike, Chris Smith, Myles Adams, and late-round picks Skyler Gill-Howard and Tyre West—though the latter two aren't natural nose tackles.

With roster spots still open, don't be surprised if Detroit adds another nose tackle before training camp kicks off in late July. And a quick note for draft nerds: since this signing happened after the NFL Draft, it won't factor into the Lions' compensatory pick formula for 2027.
