The football world is in mourning following the tragic death of former Juventus and Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger. The Austrian, aged 48, died in a car accident on Thursday morning.

Reports indicate the incident occurred around 8:20 AM at an unguarded level crossing near Salzburg. Manninger, who was travelling alone in a Volkswagen minivan, collided with a train. Despite the swift arrival of emergency services, he could not be saved. Thankfully, none of the approximately 25 passengers on the train were harmed.

Manninger's career was defined by resilience and professionalism, often serving as a reliable understudy at top clubs. He rose to prominence after Arsenal signed him from Austria in 1997. His journey later took him to Italy, where he played for several Serie A sides, most notably Juventus.

Joining the Bianconeri in 2008 as backup to the legendary Gianluigi Buffon, Manninger proved his worth whenever called upon. He made 42 appearances over four years, a period highlighted by solid performances during Buffon's injury in the 2008/09 season, and earned a Scudetto medal before departing in 2012.

After further spells in Germany with Augsburg and a final season at Liverpool in 2016, the 33-time Austrian international retired. He then chose a path less travelled for a former professional athlete, studying carpentry and moving into house renovation.

Juventus paid a heartfelt tribute to their former player, stating, "We have lost not only a great athlete, but a man of rare values: humility, dedication, and an exceptional sense of professionalism...
