Former Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke is back in the NFL, and his new role puts him on a collision course with his old team.
After months of speculation, Baalke has landed with the Cleveland Browns as a consultant, according to CBS Sports. The move reunites him with the league just in time for a potential showdown—the Browns are scheduled to face the Jaguars in Jacksonville during the 2026 season.
Baalke's NFL journey has been a winding one. He first made his mark as the San Francisco 49ers' general manager from 2011 to 2016, overseeing a roster that reached Super Bowl XLVII. After a three-year stint as an NFL football operations consultant, he joined the Jaguars in February 2020 as director of player personnel.
His rise in Jacksonville was swift. Promoted to interim GM late in the 2020 season after Dave Caldwell's firing, Baalke had the interim tag removed and held the role from 2021 through 2024. During that span, the Jaguars went 25-43, but Baalke left his mark on the roster by drafting franchise cornerstones like quarterback Trevor Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne, linebacker Devin Lloyd, and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.
The 2024 season proved turbulent for Jacksonville. A disappointing 4-13 record led to head coach Doug Pederson's firing, but owner Shad Khan initially retained Baalke. However, after several top coaching candidates passed on the job, the Jaguars and Baalke "mutually" parted ways—a move Khan described as amicable. The team eventually hired Liam Coen in February 2025, and the rest is history.
Now, Baalke's return to the league adds an intriguing subplot to the 2026 schedule. When the Browns visit Jacksonville, the reception from Jaguars fans is unlikely to be warm. For a franchise still searching for stability, seeing their former GM on the opposing sideline will be a reminder of what was—and what could have been.
