If you had "Johnny Manziel steps into the ring" on your 2025 sports bingo card, it's time to cash in. UFC President Dana White has revealed that the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback is slated to make his fighting debut on the undercard of influencer Adin Ross's Miami event this May, facing off against Bob Menery.
White, however, injected a heavy dose of skepticism into the announcement. When asked by Menery who he was betting on, White reportedly replied, "I'm betting on you don't even show up. Menery never does anything he says he's going to do." This casts the whole affair as less of a serious sporting contest and more of a potential publicity spectacle.
The news is certainly a surprising pivot for Manziel, whose athletic prowess was last seen on the gridiron. Fourteen years ago, "Johnny Football" captivated the nation, becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman after a historic 3,000-yard passing, 1,000-yard rushing season at Texas A&M. His electric college career, however, didn't translate to sustained NFL success, with stints in Cleveland, the CFL, and the AFL before his professional football journey ended.
While the transition from football to fighting is unorthodox, Manziel wouldn't be the first elite athlete to test his mettle in a new arena. The scheduled bout against Menery is set for May 16th, promising a bizarre blend of sports, entertainment, and unanswered questions about whether either man will actually answer the bell.
