The basketball community is mourning the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke, the former Desert Vista High School star and Memphis Grizzlies forward, who passed away on Tuesday, May 12, at the age of 29.
Clarke, a 6'8" power forward known for his explosive athleticism and high-flying dunks, had a promising career cut short. He played just two games in the 2025-26 season due to a right calf strain and other injuries, but his impact on the court and in the community was undeniable.
The Memphis Grizzlies and Clarke's sports agency confirmed the heartbreaking news. "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke," the Grizzlies shared in a statement. "Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Clarke's basketball journey began in Phoenix, Arizona, where he starred at Desert Vista High School. As a senior in 2015, he led his team to the Division I state championship game, earning first-team All-Arizona Division I honors from The Arizona Republic. His high school coach, Sam Duane Jr., remembered him fondly: "Sad day. Brandon was a tremendous player, elite competitor. He played with great passion and intensity, while, at the same time, respected his opponents and the game. He was extremely hard to compete against, but easy to root for."
During his senior season, Clarke recorded an incredible 10 triple-doubles—featuring points, rebounds, and blocks—showcasing his versatility as a two-way force. As a junior, he averaged 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four blocks per game, establishing himself as one of Arizona's top prospects.
After high school, Clarke took his talents to San Jose State, where he earned Mountain West Conference Sixth Man of the Year honors as a freshman. Following his sophomore season, he transferred to Gonzaga, spending his final two collegiate years with the Bulldogs and becoming a key contributor for a national powerhouse program.
Clarke was selected as the No. 21 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder but was immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on July 7, 2019. He spent his entire professional career in Memphis, where his high-energy play and defensive instincts made him a fan favorite.
As we remember Brandon Clarke, we celebrate a life lived with passion, grit, and a love for the game. His legacy will live on in the hearts of teammates, coaches, and fans who were inspired by his journey from the courts of Phoenix to the bright lights of the NBA.
