Veteran tight end Zach Ertz isn't ready to call it a career just yet. The former Washington Commanders pass-catcher, who suffered a torn ACL late last season, has confirmed his intention to return for a 14th NFL season in 2026.

In a recent interview, Ertz expressed his determination not to let that injury be the final chapter of his story. "I don't want it to be the last play that I have," Ertz stated, emphasizing his desire to get back on the field and prove he can still play at a high level.

His motivation is understandable. Before the injury in Week 14, Ertz was a reliable weapon for the Commanders, hauling in 50 passes for 504 yards and four touchdowns in just 13 games. The season prior, he was even more productive, starting all 17 games and posting 66 receptions for 654 yards and seven touchdowns, proving he still had plenty left in the tank.

However, the path back to Washington appears uncertain. The team has undergone offensive changes, including a new coordinator and the signing of tight end Chig Okonkwo in free agency. While the door hasn't been officially closed, a reunion seems unlikely at this stage.

Ertz, a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl LII champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, is approaching his comeback with clear-eyed realism. At 36, he knows teams will be cautious. "I'm going in with eyes wide open... If I was a team I probably wouldn't expect me, based on the injury, based on my age," he admitted.

But don't count the savvy veteran out. Known for his precise route-running and sure hands, Ertz believes that if he can fully recover, he can still be a valuable contributor. His journey back will be one of the more compelling stories to watch, a testament to the resilience and competitive fire that defines the NFL's best.
