Sam Dekker's basketball journey has been nothing short of remarkable. From leading the Wisconsin Badgers to back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2014 and 2015—including a national championship game run—to carving out a successful professional career in the NBA and overseas, Dekker has seen it all. Now, after years of globe-trotting, the former college star is returning to the United States to take on a new challenge: coaching.
The South Carolina Gamecocks have officially announced that Dekker will join their men's basketball staff as an assistant coach, with a primary focus on player development. It's a move that brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the SEC program.
"Development of each player's individual abilities is as important now as it has ever been in college basketball," said Gamecocks head coach Lamont Paris in a statement. "Sam's unique experiences and skill set will allow him to have a tremendous impact on our players and program immediately. He is a winner through and through, and I am thrilled to add him to our staff as an assistant coach. I know he can't wait to get to work, and neither can I. Please join me in welcoming Coach Dekker to Gamecock Nation!"
Dekker's excitement was palpable as he shared his thoughts on the new role. "I couldn't be more excited to be a part of Gamecock basketball," he said. "I'm so grateful to Coach Paris for trusting me with this role, and I take it very seriously. The decision to transition from player to coach is not one I took lightly, but joining Coach Paris and this program was a dream opportunity. I am thrilled to return to the college game and compete at such a high level in the SEC. My 11 years as a pro have provided so many experiences with amazing players, coaches and styles. Some of my best memories as a player were competing in two Final Fours with Coach Paris, and I look forward to doing that with him again. My goal is to win in March and give our players the best opportunity for success on and off the court."
For fans of the game, this is a reunion worth watching. Dekker and Paris previously worked together during those magical Wisconsin runs, and now they're teaming up again in Columbia. With Dekker's firsthand knowledge of what it takes to compete at the highest level—from March Madness to the NBA hardwood—Gamecock players are in for a treat. Whether you're a South Carolina fan or just love a good basketball story, this is one coaching addition that promises to bring energy, expertise, and a winning edge to the SEC.
