The Crucible Theatre will have to wait for its 2023 champion. In a stunning qualifying upset, former world champion Luca Brecel has been eliminated from the 2026 World Snooker Championship, falling 10-5 to Wales's Jak Jones in the final qualifying round in Sheffield.
Brecel, who famously lifted the trophy just three years ago, was outplayed by the 2024 runner-up. Jones delivered a masterclass in break-building, crafting five century breaks—including a high of 136—to secure his spot. "It was probably the best I have played all season," Jones remarked, already looking forward to the unique pressure of the Crucible arena.
While one star fell, another veteran showed his resilience. Two-time finalist Ali Carter staged a remarkable comeback from 7-5 down, winning five consecutive frames to defeat Anthony McGill 10-7. At 46, Carter will make his 22nd appearance at the sport's most iconic venue.
The day also marked a significant shift in the championship's landscape, with Chinese snooker making history. Victories for Zhang Anda, Fan Zhengyi, and Lei Peifan mean a record 11 Chinese players will compete in the main draw, surpassing last year's tally of 10. However, there was heartbreak for Xu Si, who squandered a 9-8 lead to lose a dramatic decider to England's Gary Wilson.
For Brecel and other notable casualties like Jack Lisowski, the dream is over for this year. For Jones, Carter, and a new wave of Chinese talent, the road to snooker's ultimate prize now runs through the Crucible.
