Isaiah Thomas is returning to the Boston Celtics—but this time, it's not to suit up. The beloved former guard is reportedly rejoining the franchise as a pro and college scout, according to the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach.

Thomas, now 37, will be based in his hometown of Seattle. Born in Tacoma, Washington, and a standout at the University of Washington, he's already hit the ground running. He joined Boston's executives in Chicago for the NBA Combine, which kicked off this week, helping interview draft prospects and learning the ins and outs of the scouting process. The Celtics hold the 27th overall pick in the upcoming draft.

This marks a full-circle moment for Thomas, who played for Boston from 2015 to 2017—the most electrifying stretch of his career. The pint-sized point guard quickly became a fan favorite, earning All-Star nods in 2016 and 2017 while leading a gritty Celtics resurgence. But his time in green was marred by a devastating hip injury suffered during the 2016-17 postseason, which ultimately derailed his playing days.

In the summer of 2017, Thomas was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the blockbuster deal that brought Kyrie Irving to Boston. Lingering injuries plagued him from there, and he bounced between five different NBA teams over the next five seasons, never quite recapturing his old form.

Thomas never stopped chasing a comeback. He signed with the Utah Jazz's G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, in January 2025, and earlier inked a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns in March 2024—though he didn't see game action. Now, he's channeling that same relentless energy into a new role, helping shape the next generation of Celtics talent from the front office.
