GLENDALE – After finishing the 2026 NFL draft, the Arizona Cardinals only had one obstacle left, wait for Calais Campbell. The 39-year-old rejoined the franchise after eight years and looked to be doing the retirement tour for his Hall of Fame career.

GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals' offseason waiting game has officially ended, but not in the way many expected. After a 3-14 season in 2025, the team entered the 2026 NFL draft hopeful that veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell would return for what seemed like a retirement tour. However, the 39-year-old has decided to take his talents back to familiar territory.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Campbell has signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, the team he played for from 2020 to 2022. The move comes after weeks of uncertainty, with Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort telling PHNX Cardinals' Bo Brack that the front office was "waiting for Campbell" to make his decision.

Last season was widely expected to be Campbell's final bow, but the 18-year veteran simply couldn't hang up his cleats. His production was too impressive to ignore, racking up 6.5 sacks in 2025—second on the team behind edge rusher Josh Sweat. Now, Campbell is eyeing a historic milestone: he sits at 196 career tackles for loss, just six behind J.J. Watt's all-time record of 202. Considering Campbell has recorded at least seven tackles for loss in each of the last three seasons, this chase is very much within reach.

Ironically, Campbell's only seasons with fewer than seven tackles for loss came during his first stint with the Ravens (2020-2022), where he still managed 11 sacks and 14 tackles for loss. His last Pro Bowl selection came in his first year with Baltimore, and now he's returning to a team that knows his strengths well.

This move isn't just about personal records—it's about chasing a championship. The Ravens are perennial contenders, and Campbell's veteran presence could be the missing piece for a deep playoff run. For Cardinals fans, it's a bittersweet farewell to a player who gave everything on the field, but his pursuit of history and a Super Bowl ring makes this chapter worth watching.

As for the Cardinals, they'll now shift focus to building for the future, having already secured two players in ESPN's latest draft projections. But for now, the spotlight is on Campbell as he dons purple and black once more.
