The NFL community is mourning the tragic loss of former Arizona Cardinals cornerback Chris Payton-Jones, who passed away at just 30 years old following a devastating auto accident in Florida.

Payton-Jones, affectionately known as "CPJ" to teammates, spent three seasons with the Cardinals from 2018 to 2020. During that time, he played under two head coaches—Steve Wilks in 2018 and Kliff Kingsbury for the next two seasons. In 13 games with Arizona, including three starts, he recorded 22 tackles and six pass deflections, contributing on both defense (273 snaps) and special teams (163 snaps).

His journey to the NFL was anything but easy. After playing 26 games at Nebraska—where a senior-year knee injury hurt his draft stock—Payton-Jones went undrafted. He initially signed with the Detroit Lions but was released on final cuts. The Cardinals claimed him off waivers and added him to their practice squad, beginning a cycle of being cut, re-signed, elevated to the active roster, and back again. He made his NFL debut in November 2018, a testament to his perseverance.

In 2020, the Lions grabbed him from Arizona's practice squad, but his time in the league also included stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans. Across four NFL seasons, he played in 29 games.

The accident occurred on State Road 24 in Florida, a route that runs southwest from Gainesville to just north of Tampa. According to reports, Payton-Jones was driving eastbound in the westbound lane when his car collided head-on with a pickup truck. His vehicle overturned and burst into flames. Three people in the pickup sustained injuries, but Payton-Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, Payton-Jones was remembered not just for his gridiron grit but for the kind of teammate and man he was off the field. As one heartfelt tribute put it: "A beloved teammate. An even greater man. Rest in peace, CPJ."
