The UCLA Bruins women's basketball team is welcoming back a familiar face to Westwood. Rising junior guard Elina Aarnisalo is returning to the program via the transfer portal after a one-year stint with the North Carolina Tar Heels, bringing two years of eligibility with her.
Aarnisalo's homecoming is a significant move for a Bruins squad facing a major roster overhaul. The defending national champions are losing their entire starting lineup to graduation and the WNBA Draft, including the six players who scored all 79 points in their title game victory. Head coach Cori Close has stated she plans to add at least five players through the portal to rebuild, making Aarnisalo a crucial first piece of that new foundation.
Her familiarity with the program is a huge asset. As a freshman during UCLA's 2024-25 Final Four run, Aarnisalo played in all 37 games, making 10 starts and proving herself a reliable part of the rotation. After transferring to North Carolina seeking a larger role—where she started 26 games and averaged 10.2 points as a sophomore—she now returns to UCLA as a more experienced and proven player.
This strategic addition signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Bruins. Aarnisalo's guard skills, playmaking, and knowledge of the system will be invaluable as UCLA looks to reload and defend its championship crown, demonstrating the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines Bruin athletics.
