Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Kellen Mond recently sparked conversation on X about the team's much-discussed quarterback competition. While the Browns' QB room features Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, and Dillon Gabriel, Mond offered a clear-headed take that cuts through the noise.
Let's set the stage. After Cleveland's impressive draft two weeks ago, all eyes turned to the quarterback position—and for good reason. It's been far too long since Browns fans have seen consistent, reliable play under center. If the team had even managed average QB performance over the past few seasons, who knows how many more wins they'd have? Instead, it's been a struggle, and the results have reflected that.
As the 2026 season approaches, many believe the real battle is between Watson and Sanders. But Mond sees it differently. In his view, this is Watson's job to lose—largely due to the financial commitment the team has made. "Anyone who's been in the NFL knows 'QB1 competition' isn't really a thing (very rare)," Mond tweeted. "It's about choosing the guy who you believe gives you the best chance to win and maximizing his reps. Especially when the money plays a factor."
That said, Mond doesn't rule out a challenge. He points to Dillon Gabriel as a potential dark horse who could apply real pressure. Interestingly, Gabriel actually beat out Sanders for the starting role in 2025 and got the first crack at the job. Mond warns fans not to be surprised if Gabriel bounces back and proves he deserves either the backup spot—or even the starting role.
Whether you believe the competition is wide open or already decided, one thing is clear: Cleveland's quarterback situation is far from settled, and the drama is just getting started.
