Former Auburn quarterback Zach Calzada's rollercoaster football career has hit another speed bump. The 25-year-old signal-caller was released by the CFL's Ottawa RedBlacks on Thursday, as reported by 3 Down Nation. Calzada had only signed with the team on April 27, fresh off wrapping up his college career at Kentucky. For a player who's been on four different rosters over seven seasons, this is just the latest chapter in a story full of twists and turns.

Calzada's journey began at Texas A&M, where he spent three seasons. After a quiet freshman year in 2019—completing 12 of 24 passes for three touchdowns—he sat out the 2020 campaign. But when starter Haynes King went down early in 2021, Calzada stepped up and delivered the defining moment of his college career: a stunning 41-38 upset over Alabama, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns. That win in College Station made him a hot commodity in the transfer portal.

Auburn came calling after Bo Nix's departure to Oregon, and Calzada seemed like the answer. But a shoulder injury sidelined him before he ever took a snap for the Tigers, forcing Auburn to rely on T.J. Finley and Robby Ashford. The result? A disappointing 5-7 season that cost head coach Bryan Harsin his job after just eight games.

Calzada rebounded at Incarnate Word, where he spent two seasons lighting up the stat sheet: 6,342 passing yards, 54 touchdowns, and a 17-5 record. That success earned him a return to the SEC with Kentucky for the 2025 season, but his time there was brief—just three games and two starts before being replaced by freshman Cutter Boley.

Now, as a free agent, the question is whether Calzada's football journey continues. For a quarterback who's beaten Alabama and bounced back from injuries, the next chapter might still be unwritten.
