The NFL community is mourning the loss of former Arizona Cardinals head coach Dave McGinnis, who has passed away at the age of 74.

Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill released a heartfelt statement, saying, "We were deeply saddened to learn of Dave McGinnis’ passing... As Dave often said, he was a ‘ballcoach’ through and through, and no one ever filled that role with more passion, enthusiasm, and charisma." Bidwill added, "Coach Mac truly loved the game and everything — and everyone — associated with it, especially his players. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed."

McGinnis's coaching journey was defined by defensive grit and loyalty. He began his NFL career in 1986 with the Chicago Bears, serving as linebackers coach for nearly a decade—a tenure that included the legendary '85 Bears defense. He brought that hard-nosed mentality to Arizona in 1996 as defensive coordinator, helping steer the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance and win after the franchise's move from St. Louis.

Taking over as head coach mid-season in 2000 after Vince Tobin was fired, McGinnis led the team for three full additional seasons. While his overall record of 17-40 reflects a challenging era for the franchise, he is remembered for his unwavering passion and the profound respect he commanded from his players. His legacy is one of a true football lifer who left an indelible mark on everyone in his orbit.

Our deepest condolences go out to Coach McGinnis's family, friends, and all who were touched by his spirited career.
