In a bizarre and audacious sports-related scam, a former Alabama defensive Lineman is accused of impersonating NFL players—including former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku—to swindle lenders out of nearly $20 million. According to a report, Luther Davis, who was part of Alabama's 2009-10 national championship team, allegedly used wigs, makeup, and even a durag to transform into his targets during loan meetings.
The scheme, which unfolded over a 17-month period starting in May 2023, reportedly saw Davis and partner CJ Evins impersonate three athletes: David Njoku, former Alabama safety Xavier McKinney, and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The players were reportedly unaware their identities were being used. The duo allegedly fabricated documents, created fake emails, and even presented fraudulent driver's licenses to secure loans.
Court documents indicate the pair obtained at least 13 loans totaling $19.8 million. Specific amounts include a $4.025 million loan secured while impersonating Njoku, $4.35 million while posing as McKinney, and $3.3 million for the Penix Jr. impersonation. Davis is reportedly charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, and both men plan to plead guilty.
This isn't Davis's first brush with controversy; in 2013, he was reportedly an intermediary in a separate incident involving five college players. The elaborate nature of this latest scheme—complete with theatrical disguises—highlights a stunning breach of trust and a stark reminder of the financial risks athletes can face off the field.
