Five-star quarterback Jared Curtis is making some serious noise before even taking a snap in college. The former Georgia Bulldogs commit, who flipped to Vanderbilt in December, has a bold prediction for his time in Nashville: a national championship.
"I'm going to win the national championship that you couldn't win," Curtis told former Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia, as revealed by Pavia at the NFL combine. It's a statement that echoes the swagger of a player who believes he's the missing piece for a program on the rise.
Curtis isn't alone in his confidence. Head coach Clark Lea made waves at the 2022 SEC media days by declaring Vanderbilt would become "the best program in the country"—a bold claim for a team coming off a 2-10 season. But Lea has backed it up: the Commodores now boast back-to-back winning seasons and a 10-3 record last year that narrowly missed the College Football Playoff.
According to a recent ESPN feature, Pavia played a key role in Curtis's recruitment, even attending one of his high school games. A visit to Vanderbilt for the Missouri game in October sealed the deal, convincing the five-star talent to swap Athens for Nashville.
But the starting job isn't guaranteed. Curtis is battling Blaze Berlowitz and others for the QB1 spot, while the team works to replace significant talent on both sides of the ball. The mental adjustment to college football is still a work in progress, and if Curtis wins the job, his first SEC test could come in a hostile environment: a road game at Georgia on Oct. 3.
For now, the hype is real. Whether Curtis can deliver on his championship promise remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure—Vanderbilt football has a new face of its future.
