Barcelona may have left Vitoria with a bitter taste after a narrow defeat to Deportivo Alaves, but the match could ultimately be remembered as the night a new star was born at the club.
For months, the Catalan giants have been scouring the transfer market for a left-footed centre-back, with Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni emerging as their top target ahead of the summer window. However, after witnessing the debut of La Masia graduate Alvaro Cortes, manager Hansi Flick might have found the perfect solution much closer to home.
Few expected the German coach to hand the young defender his first start, but the decision paid off handsomely. From the opening whistle, Cortes played with a composure and maturity that belied his age, immediately looking at home on the senior stage.
The teenager showcased a complete skill set—calm in possession, aggressive in duels, and fearless under pressure. One of the most promising signs was the natural chemistry he developed with fellow youngster Pau Cubarsi, as the duo looked perfectly balanced during build-up play. Cortes constantly demanded the ball and showed no hesitation when playing out from the back.
Defensively, the academy product was equally impressive. He reacted quickly to Alaves' counter-attacks, timed his clearances with precision, and rarely looked troubled even when isolated in one-on-one situations. The second half brought another test when Jules Kounde shifted into central defense, but Cortes continued to perform with the same unwavering confidence alongside the experienced Frenchman.
His statistical output was remarkable: a 95% passing accuracy, 109 touches, five clearances, and eight duels won out of 13. Remarkably, he didn't misplace a single pass until the 76th minute when attempting a long diagonal ball.
While Barcelona's search for a left-footed center-back may continue, Cortes' debut suggests the answer might already be wearing Blaugrana colors—and from the very academy that has produced so many of the club's legends.
