Nottingham Forest have made history by clinching their first-ever Netball Super League play-off spot, powering past league leaders Loughborough Lightning with a commanding 76-65 victory. The win not only secured fourth place for Forest but also ensured they can't be caught by the chasing pack—a monumental achievement for a squad in just its second season.
Trailing by just four at halftime (39-35), Forest turned up the intensity in the second half, extending their lead to hand Lightning only their second loss of the season. Rolene Streutker was unstoppable in attack, netting 42 goals, while goalkeeper Jayda Pechova anchored the defense with a standout performance that earned her player of the match honors.
"We had a really good performance last week, and we just built on that. We put it all out there," said Pechova. "I feel like I really worked hard this year, and it's paying off. Being our second year as a squad and coming this far—it's crazy. We're top four, and how we've gelled as a squad is incredible."
Forest coach Chelsea Pitman couldn't hide her emotions after watching her team reach the postseason. "We spoke about the importance of this game—the opportunity to get to the semi-finals no matter what happens with other teams," she said. "And for them to go out there and put out a consistent four quarters—still room for improvement—I'm a happy coach."
In the night's other action, Manchester Thunder stormed past Leeds Rhinos 82-66, knocking Lightning off the top of the standings. Thunder now lead the league on goal difference, with both teams boasting 10 wins and two losses. Eleanor Cardwell (33 goals) and Sophie Fawns (19 goals) led the charge for Thunder, while Paige Reed's 24 goals were the highlight for Rhinos, who have never beaten their cross-Pennine rivals.
With round 12 still in progress, bottom-side Birmingham Panthers face Dragons on Saturday, followed by a London derby on Sunday as Mavericks host third-placed Pulse. The results of those games will determine final standings, but Forest's victory has already ended the play-off hopes of both Mavericks and Dragons.
