Nottingham Forest have made history by securing their first-ever Netball Super League play-off berth, thanks to a commanding 76-65 victory over league leaders Loughborough Lightning. In just their second season as a franchise, Forest have proven they belong among the elite, and this win cements their place in the postseason with authority.
The match was a showcase of resilience and skill. Forest carried a narrow 39-35 lead into halftime, then refused to let up, extending their advantage and handing Lightning only their second loss of the campaign. Rolene Streutker was unstoppable in attack, netting 42 goals, while goalkeeper Jayda Pechova delivered a defensive masterclass that left Lightning scrambling.
Pechova, named player of the match, couldn't hide her excitement. "We had a really good performance last week and we just built on that. We put it all out there," she said. "I feel like I really worked hard this year and it's paying off. It being our second year as a squad and we've come this far, it's crazy. We're top four and our performance and how we've gelled as a squad is incredible."
Head coach Chelsea Pitman was visibly emotional after the game, reflecting on how far the team has come. "We spoke about the importance of this game, the opportunity to getting to the semi-finals no matter what happens with other teams," she explained. "And for them to go out there and put out a consistent four quarters – still room for improvement – I'm a happy coach."
The night also saw Manchester Thunder leapfrog Lightning to claim the top spot. Thunder's 82-66 win over Leeds Rhinos was powered by Eleanor Cardwell (33 goals) and Sophie Fawns (19 goals), while Paige Reed's 24 goals were the highlight for a Rhinos side still searching for their first-ever win against their cross-Pennine rivals. With both Thunder and Lightning sitting on 10 wins and two losses, it's Thunder who now lead on goal difference, setting up a thrilling finish to the regular season.
Forest's triumph also dashed the play-off hopes of both Mavericks and Dragons, who sit sixth and fifth respectively. The remaining round 12 fixtures see bottom-placed Birmingham Panthers host Dragons on Saturday, while a London derby pits Mavericks against third-placed Pulse on Sunday. But for now, the spotlight belongs to Forest—a team that's turning heads and writing its own story in the Netball Super League.
