Max Verstappen behind the wheel of a Ford at Le Mans isn't just a fan's fantasy—it's a real possibility that Ford Performance is actively pursuing. Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance's global director, confirmed to Motorsport.com that discussions with the four-time Formula 1 champion are very much alive.

"Yes, of course," Rushbrook said when asked about the talks. "We love Max. We love what he does in the Formula 1 car, on the track. We love him off the track. He's a great person, as much as he's a great driver. We love his passion to be racing GT3, like he is, and what he does with developing drivers through sim racing and getting them on the track. So, of course, we have regular discussions with him about what are the opportunities to do more in sportscar, including Hypercar. He's a racer. He wants to race."

Verstappen's name has been circulating in the endurance racing world for some time now, and for good reason. The Dutch driver has a well-known appetite for long-distance racing, and his existing ties to Ford through Red Bull Powertrains make the partnership a natural fit. He's already set to compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, marking his next step into GT racing. A bid for an outright Le Mans victory seems like the obvious next milestone—and Ford appears to be the ideal partner to help him achieve it.

But there's one major hurdle: the calendar. Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, which means his schedule is packed with 24-race F1 seasons for the foreseeable future. "He wants to go race Le Mans and race for the overall win, but most years the schedule doesn't allow it, right? While he's a committed Formula 1 driver, most years now it's a conflict," Rushbrook explained. "I think we're just talking about what the opportunity is and if and when it makes sense, and everybody wants to do it, then great."

Rushbrook also clarified that this wouldn't happen in 2027, Ford's debut year in the Hypercar class. Any potential third-car entry at Le Mans would have to come after the program's first season, meaning fans will have to wait a bit longer to see if this dream drive becomes a reality. For now, the conversation continues—and that alone is enough to get any motorsport enthusiast excited.
