For Will Buxton, ‘No Race Comes Close’ To The Indy 500

Will Buxton will call his second Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend. The magnitude of the event has made a lasting impression.

Will Buxton has called it "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," and after experiencing his first Indianapolis 500 last year, he's convinced: no race comes close.

This Memorial Day weekend, Buxton will return to the booth for his second Indy 500 as lead commentator for FOX Sports. It's a role he's held for 18 months now, and in that time, he's become one of IndyCar's most passionate advocates. In an exclusive interview, Buxton shared how his journey into the sport has reignited a love for racing that feels brand new every time he hits the track.

For Buxton, racing isn't just a job—it's a rediscovered passion. "Talking racing with Will Buxton is like talking to that kid who discovers racing for the first time," he says. That genuine love for motorsports shines through, whether he's breaking down a tight corner or celebrating a historic win. Despite his rock-star status from Netflix's Drive to Survive and his years in Formula 1, Buxton remains approachable and refreshingly honest about his ongoing education in IndyCar.

"The biggest thing for me over the last 18 months has been realizing how much of what I knew about Formula 1 went in by osmosis—from watching as a kid to working in the sport for 25 years," Buxton explains. "I'd always loved IndyCar as a fan, but I hadn't taken that studious approach. So I had to build current knowledge while also building a foundation of the entire history—and this sport goes back over 100 years, far further than Formula One's 70-odd years."

That deep dive into history will serve him well this weekend. FOX Sports has invested heavily in the broadcast, with over 60 hours of programming around the Indy 500. The scale is staggering: around 200 crew members, more than 150 microphones, 70 cameras, helicopter shots, and two drones—all connected by some 200 miles of cable. It's a production as massive as the race itself, and Buxton is ready to rise to the occasion.
