What would you do if your team faced relegation? For one die-hard Oxford United fan, the answer was simple: lace up his walking boots and take on a challenge that would test even the fittest supporter.
Neil McManus, a 47-year-old superfan from Drayton, is currently walking a staggering 125 miles—the equivalent of five consecutive marathons—to catch the U's final away fixture of the season against Millwall at The Den. And he's doing it all in just five days.
But this isn't just any fan pilgrimage. Neil's journey has a deeper purpose. In December 2024, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer, a "life-changing" shock that came just before what he hoped would be a "nice normal Christmas."
"I was diagnosed out of the blue," Neil recalls. "But thankfully it was picked up really early, and it's really, really treatable." Now cancer-free, he's turning his health scare into a mission to raise funds and awareness for Fight Bladder Cancer, the charity that supported him through his diagnosis.
So how did this epic trek come about? Neil admits the idea struck after "a couple of bottles of red wine" on New Year's Eve. "I'm kind of regretting my life choices," he jokes, before adding seriously: "I'm really trying to raise awareness of bladder cancer and its symptoms."
For any football fan, the commitment is awe-inspiring. Oxford United's relegation from the Championship is already sealed, but Neil isn't letting that dampen his spirits. As he pounds the pavement toward The Den, he'll be hoping his beloved U's can finish the season with a flourish—and that he'll have just enough energy left to cheer them on.
Whether you're a casual fan or a dedicated supporter, Neil's story is a powerful reminder of the lengths we go to for the teams we love—and the causes that matter most.
