The University of Minnesota football program is making a big move north, betting heavily on talent from Moorhead. The Gophers secured their fourth recruit from the city when cornerback Zak Walker announced his commitment on Wednesday.

"After a great visit and talk with my family, I have decided to commit to the University of Minnesota," Walker shared on social media. "The people, culture, and player development make it a place I am proud to call home. Row the Boat!"

Walker joins a growing Moorhead pipeline that already includes quarterback Jett Feeney, receiver David Mack, and running back Taye Reich—all of whom committed back in February and March. While Walker hasn't yet received a star rating from recruiting services, he's no stranger to interest, holding scholarship offers from North Dakota State, North Dakota, South Dakota State, and South Dakota.

Listed at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, Walker brings serious athleticism to the table. He's showcased his speed and explosiveness on both sides of the ball, and his track and field numbers are eye-popping: school records in the long jump (24 feet, 8 inches), the 100-meter dash (10.57 seconds), and the 200-meter dash (21.36). He posted those impressive marks at the Hamline Elite Meet in St. Paul back in May.

The Gophers didn't stop there. On Tuesday, they added another linebacker to their 2027 class, this time from Sioux City, Iowa. Kason Clayborne, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound three-star recruit, chose Minnesota over offers from Michigan State, Purdue, Kansas State, Kansas, and Arizona. Clayborne, who also plays baseball, was a top priority for linebackers coach Mariano Sori-Marin. His older brother, Kobe Clayborne, made a name for himself as a defensive lineman at South Dakota State, earning all-Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention honors in 2024.

With Walker and Clayborne on board, the Gophers now have 15 total commitments for the 2027 class. It's clear the program is building for the future—and looking north and west to do it.
