New York Governor Kathy Hochul tried to make a bold statement about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but it did not land the way she likely expected.

With the tournament set to take place across multiple cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, several regions are positioning themselves as central hubs for the global event.

However, when it comes to the actual logistics of hosting matches, the details matter. And in this case, those details quickly became the center of attention.

Because as soon as the claim was made, football fans were quick to point out what they saw as a major oversight.

In a post shared via Kathy Hochul on X, the governor made a confident declaration.

“New York isn’t just hosting the World Cup. New York is the World Cup,” Hochul wrote.

The statement aimed to highlight the city’s importance on the global stage, especially with major events and fan experiences expected across the region during the tournament.

But it did not take long for fans to question the accuracy of that claim. The immediate response online focused on one key detail. The matches themselves are not set to be played in New York.

Instead, the games will take place at MetLife Stadium, which is located in New Jersey, a distinction fans were quick to highlight.

One user responded, “New York isn’t hosting anything. But thanks for speaking, incorrectly.” Another added, “No, you are not even hosting a game. New Jersey is.”

The confusion around location became a recurring theme in the reactions. “Isn’t all this in New Jersey?” one comment read, while another took it further by saying, “You would think the Governor of New York would have the ability to read a map and the comprehension to know New Jersey is not NY.”

Even simpler responses carried the same message. “I think you need to check a map!” one fan wrote.

While New York City is expected to play a major role in hosting fans, events, and media during the World Cup, the distinction between hosting activities and hosting matches has clearly not gone unnoticed.

And based on the reaction, that difference is something fans are not willing to overlook.
