Football club's mascot named after mentor who died

Aaron Mills, 18, who recently died from meningitis, was a mentor and coach for Wolverley FC.

In a heartfelt tribute that captures the true spirit of community football, Wolverley Football Club in Kidderminster has announced it will name its new mascot in honor of a beloved former mentor and coach. The club's mascot, a swan, will be known as "Swazza the Swan," a touching nod to 18-year-old Aaron Mills, who tragically passed away from meningitis in early January.

Aaron, remembered as a "valued" and inspirational figure within the grassroots club, earned the nickname "Swazza" during his school days. According to his father, Anthony Mills, a teacher at King Charles I School coined the term after watching Aaron score spectacular, curling goals on the pitch. "He would score a worldly goal with a bit of curve and a bit of swaz on it," Anthony recalled, highlighting the athletic flair that made Aaron stand out.

For his parents, Deniz and Anthony, the mascot naming is a profound source of pride. "We were incredibly proud of Aaron anyway for the person he was," Anthony shared. "After he passed, we heard so many stories of how he affected others. For the club to honor him this way keeps us remembering him for all the right reasons."

The decision emerged from a community call for mascot name suggestions, with "Swazza" resonating deeply following the shocking news of Aaron's illness. Club founder Gavin Jones described Aaron as "beyond his years—always happy and always smiling," making the tribute a natural fit. "It was refreshing to see someone his age with that attitude," Jones noted. "It’s a fitting tribute to a great young lad."

Aaron's sudden battle with Meningitis B, a strain not covered in standard school vaccinations, began with headaches and escalated rapidly. Despite emergency brain surgery, his family received the devastating news that his condition was untreatable. This loss underscores the unpredictable challenges athletes and communities can face, even off the field.

This story is a powerful reminder of how sports apparel and community clubs are about more than just games—they're about the people, the legacy, and the bonds that endure. Wolverley FC's gesture ensures that Aaron Mills' spirit and nickname will continue to inspire players and fans from the sidelines, a lasting legacy for a young man who left an indelible mark on his team.
