The transfer portal is officially open, and new Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey is wasting no time making a major statement. This weekend, the Cardinals are set to host a pair of elite prospects, headlined by one of the most sought-after big men in the nation.
Former Kansas star Flory Bidunga, the reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, will be on campus Friday. He’ll be joined by ex-Oregon point guard Jackson Shelstad, with both players represented by the same agent, signaling a coordinated recruiting push. Adding to the weekend’s momentum, former San Francisco wing Tyrone Riley IV is also scheduled for a Sunday visit.
For Kelsey and Louisville, these visits are critical. The roster currently sits at just three scholarship players for the 2026-27 season, creating an urgent need for high-impact talent. As one anonymous agent bluntly put it, Louisville has the "elite buying power" to be aggressive, and they’re starting at the top of the market.
Flory Bidunga is the crown jewel of this initial wave. The 6-foot-10 sophomore from the Democratic Republic of Congo was a force for Kansas, averaging 13.3 points, 9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game while shooting a remarkable 64% from the field. His 13 double-doubles ranked second in the tough Big 12 conference. For a Louisville team that struggled mightily in the paint and on the glass against top competition last season, landing a defensive anchor and rebounding machine like Bidunga would be a program-changing acquisition.
Of course, competition will be fierce. Duke, Michigan, and St. John’s are also reportedly in the mix for the dominant big man. But by hosting him on one of the first official visits of the cycle, Pat Kelsey has made it clear that Louisville intends to compete for the very best talent available as they rebuild the Cardinals into a contender.
