Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell is sending a clear message as the pressure mounts: he still has the play-calling magic that once made his offense unstoppable.

Speaking at the ACC Spring Meetings, Norvell didn't hold back when discussing his offensive credentials. "I've been really good at calling plays throughout my coaching career," he told reporters. "I don't say that in any way other than it's just true. I feel very confident in our ability and who we get to coach."

It's hard to argue with the results. Norvell transformed Jordan Travis into one of the NFL's most promising quarterback prospects before a devastating injury cut that story short in November 2023. At Memphis, he guided Brady White to a New Year's Six bowl appearance. His pro-style offense never finished outside the top 15 during his four years with the Tigers, and in 2022, Florida State ranked among the top 20 in both points per game and yards per play.

But the 2024 season was a different story, one many fans would rather forget. Injuries and inconsistency plagued the Seminoles, and the team's NIL and revenue-sharing investments have slipped in recent years. Add in Gus Malzahn's sudden retirement in February—right after the team's transfer portal plans were locked in—and it's clear Norvell is entering the 2026 season on a very warm seat.

Confidence can be a double-edged sword. Norvell's bold statements could either serve as a rallying cry or set him up for a fall. The schedule offers little mercy: a Week 3 trip to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama could be forgiven, but only if the Seminoles don't stumble against SMU in an early-season showdown. A 2-5 start, especially with a loss to Miami, would almost certainly spell the end.

The question now is whether Norvell's play-calling prowess can rise to the occasion once more—or if the hot seat is about to get even hotter.
