With the college football spring practice season now behind us, the Florida Gators moved up a spot in Sports Illustrated's way-too-early rankings.

Spring practice has wrapped up, and the summer heat is settling in—which means it's the perfect time for another round of way-too-early college football rankings. This time, the Florida Gators are climbing the ladder.

Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer recently updated his preseason projections, bumping the Gators up one spot to No. 19 in the nation. While some might raise an eyebrow at this optimistic outlook, there's a growing sense of belief in Gainesville as the program looks to move past a challenging chapter under former head coach Billy Napier and embrace a fresh start with Jon Sumrall at the helm.

"If you're looking for a surprise turnaround in the SEC, the Gators will be a trendy pick," Fischer writes. "The quarterback battle was inconclusive in the spring between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr., but there's a host of quality skill position players they can rely on early before settling things under center. The offensive line is a bit of a question mark and a chief concern, but this should be a solid step forward in coach Jon Sumrall's debut campaign."

The No. 19 ranking places Florida squarely between the No. 18 Penn State Nittany Lions and No. 20 Washington Huskies—a sign that the Gators are seen as a team with real potential to surprise in the rugged SEC landscape. With a new coaching staff and plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, Orange and Blue faithful have reason to be cautiously excited about what's ahead.

As the summer workouts begin, all eyes will be on how Sumrall and his squad build on this momentum. For now, the Gators are trending in the right direction—and that's something worth celebrating in the sweltering Florida heat.
