The Florida Gators just added some serious size to their future defensive line—and they did it by winning a recruiting battle that had the entire SEC paying attention.

On Friday night, Jon Sumrall and the Gators landed a commitment from defensive lineman Cain Van Norden, a 6-foot-7, 285-pound prospect out of Bishop McNamara High School in Maryland. Van Norden, who is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals, chose Florida over Georgia, Ole Miss, and Maryland—a list of programs that were all hoping to bring him in for official visits this summer. Instead, Van Norden decided to lock in with the Gators early.

What makes this commitment stand out isn't just the size—it's the upside. Van Norden is relatively new to football, having spent most of his high school career on the basketball court. Once he made the switch to the gridiron, the offers started flying in fast. He racked up more than 20 scholarship offers before narrowing his focus to a handful of top programs.

Florida's coaching staff made Van Norden a priority from the start, and that persistence paid off. "They're recruiting me pretty hard, probably the hardest," Van Norden told Gators Online earlier this month. "Everything is going well. Coach Chatman came up to see me a few weeks ago, and then coach Saxton and the defensive coordinator came to see me last week, so we are building a strong relationship."

That personal touch helped seal the deal. Van Norden took visits to Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Florida before ultimately deciding that Gainesville was the right fit. He's now the 15th commitment in Florida's 2027 recruiting class and the 12th since April 1—a sign that the Gators are building serious momentum on the recruiting trail.

With his combination of height, length, and raw athleticism, Van Norden has the tools to develop into a disruptive force on the defensive line. For Gators fans, this is the kind of high-upside addition that could pay big dividends down the road.
