Spring football is in full swing across the Sunshine State, and for recruiting reporters, that means one thing: hitting the road. The USA TODAY Florida Network has been crisscrossing the state, checking in with top prospects and uncovering hidden gems along the way. In this edition of "Extra Points," we're opening up the notebook to share what we've seen and heard so far this spring—and trust us, the buzz is building.
One of the biggest storylines? The Florida Gators are making waves. On April 25, Dillard High School speedster Vernell Jennings III committed to UF, and he's quickly become the crown jewel of a loaded Panthers squad. Jennings, ranked No. 61 nationally, chose the Gators over a stacked offer list of nearly 40 schools, including Florida State, Auburn, and Maryland. And here's the kicker: he's all but shut down his recruitment after using all five official visits. What sealed the deal? The new staff in Gainesville.
"Coach Sumrall and Coach Davis were two key factors," Jennings told us at a spring practice, referencing head coach Jon Sumrall and wide receivers coach Marcus Davis. "As soon as I met Sumrall, he was off the charts—dapping me up and giving me a hug. Even when I committed over the phone, he was just really excited." That energy is infectious, and it's a big reason why the Gators are trending up in the recruiting world.
But Jennings isn't the only star at Dillard. Keep an eye on rising senior wide receivers Isaiah Monestime and Josh Sylvain—both standing at 6-foot-4 and seeing their recruitments heat up. Programs like Colorado and Kentucky have already come calling, and with Jennings leading the way, this Panthers' passing attack is one to watch this fall.
As we hit the road for more visits, one thing is clear: Florida's recruiting landscape is as competitive as ever. Whether you're a Gators fan, a Hurricanes supporter, or just love the game, the spring is setting the stage for a wild ride ahead. Stay tuned—we've got plenty more intel coming your way.
