In a move that even caught his family off guard, five-star defensive back Donte Wright has flipped his commitment from Georgia to Miami, choosing the Hurricanes over the reigning national champions.

The Long Beach Poly (Calif.) standout is one of the top defensive backs in the nation, ranked No. 12 overall in the Rivals Industry Ranking—a composite of all three major recruiting services. For weeks, whispers of Miami's growing momentum had been circulating, but the plan seemed to be for Wright to take all his official visits before making a final call. Then, everything changed in a matter of hours.

"This all happened today," Wright's father, Donte Sr., said. "I mean, in the last two hours, he came to me and said, 'Dad, I'm doing this now.'"

The elder Wright explained that Miami had been trending for some time, even if it wasn't widely known. "It was more a matter of when, not if," he added. "But I didn't even know it would be this soon. For Donte, the process was getting tiresome, and he wanted to shut it down."

So what sealed the deal for the five-star recruit? According to his father, it was a combination of factors that made Coral Gables feel like home.

"Out of the schools we visited, that felt like home for him," Donte Sr. said. "He visited twice, and they were his favorite visits. He loves the culture out there and how they play."

There's also the unmistakable swagger that Miami has long been known for—a swagger that's making a comeback under head coach Mario Cristobal. "Growing up, Miami had that swagger, and they're getting it back," Donte Sr. noted. "That fits Donte. He loves Mario Cristobal and believes in his vision."

One potential concern was the absence of a full-time cornerbacks coach, but the Wright family isn't worried. "We know Will Harris really well—that's who we mess with there—and we're super confident in the plan they have for him," Donte Sr. said.

That plan includes immediate playing time. "They see him playing a lot right away," his father explained. "They're all about competition, and the best players will play, no matter the grade. They think Donte is an NFL guy, and they're going to do all they can to maximize his talent there."

With a roster already brimming with talent and a proven track record of player development, the Hurricanes have added a game-changing piece to their secondary. For Wright, the decision came down to one thing: comfort. "End of the day, it was where he felt most comfortable," his father said. "The team, the staff, the culture, the city of Miami—it was everything."
