The first day of the Rockland County outdoor track and field championships at Nyack High School delivered exactly what fans hope for: personal-best performances, tight finishes, and a glimpse of even bigger things to come on Day 2.
Think of it as the appetizer—and Thursday promises to be the main course. With only a handful of events contested so far, the excitement is already building for what's next.
The girls' triple jump was a standout, with three athletes soaring past 37 feet and several more landing just inches shy. In true track-and-field spirit, competitors cheered each other on, turning the event into a showcase of both talent and camaraderie.
Tappan Zee junior Tosia Bednarz claimed the win with a season-best 37-10, just 1.5 inches off her all-time personal best from last year's Section 1 state qualifier. She was quick to credit the energy of the field: "It was so cool to see... Usually, we don't see that many girls jumping over 37 feet, but today everybody was hitting massive PBs. We were all cheering each other on and having a good time."
In total, 14 jumpers set personal records, and five—including Bednarz—posted season bests. For Bednarz, the performance is a promising step toward redemption. Last year at the state championships, she was badly spiked by another competitor after her first jump, finishing well short of her potential. This year, she's focused on staying healthy and making a stronger run. "I really want to come back into states feeling a lot better and doing a lot better than I did last year," she said with a smile.
On the boys' side, North Rockland junior Carlos Eliezer made his own statement in the triple jump, tying his indoor personal best and setting a new outdoor mark. His performance added to the day's momentum, proving that Rockland County's track talent runs deep.
With Day 1 in the books, the stage is set for an action-packed Thursday. Whether you're a competitor, a coach, or a fan, this is the kind of championship season that makes every step, every throw, and every leap worth watching.
