Both Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete, who are expected to be leading contenders in the upcoming FIGC presidential election, reportedly see Conte as the ideal leader to guide Italy through Euro 2028 qualification and beyond. The timing, however, adds a layer of complexity. The new FIGC president will not be elected until June 22nd, meaning Italy's two matches earlier that month will be overseen by a caretaker manager. The final decision on the permanent coach will rest with the incoming administration.

Conte, currently at Napoli, is no stranger to the Italy job, having previously led the national team from 2014 to 2016.
